The dark web is a part of the internet that is intentionally hidden and is inaccessible through standard web browsers. It is often associated with illegal activities, including the sale of drugs, versus market darknet weapons, and stolen data. One of the most notorious aspects of the dark web is the presence of dark web markets, which are online marketplaces where illegal goods and services are traded.
How Do Dark Web Markets Work?
Today, in the post-Silk Road era, many online black markets continue to thrive. As a billion dollar industry dealing in illicit goods, dark web markets are a great concern for governments. US agencies, like the FBI, are constantly working with international law enforcement agencies to stop the growth of dark web markets all over the globe. The Silk Road was an online black market where users could buy and sell illicit goods anonymously. It operated via darknets, anonymous networks that can only be accessed through specialized software like Tor Browser.
Dark web markets operate similarly to legitimate online marketplaces, but with a few key differences. Instead of using standard payment methods like credit cards or PayPal, dark web markets typically use cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin to facilitate transactions. This allows buyers and sellers to remain anonymous, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them down.
Where \(c_j\) is the number of coexisting marketplaces at the time of closure of j. We find that the data differ significantly from the uniform random choice model, confirming the presence of coordination between migrating users (see Fig. 6). Focusing on the first week after closure, we find that, on average, one marketplace absorbs \(66.1\% \pm 16.1\) of all migrant users. Only 4% of the users migrate to more than one coexisting marketplace simultaneously after the closure. Figure 6b shows that, in 36.4% of the closures considered, it is the one sharing the largest number of common users with the closed marketplace(the probability that users migrate to the marketplace ranked second or the third is 31.8%). Users do not choose to migrate to marketplaces that have fewer common users than the third-ranked marketplace.
Dark web markets are also typically hosted on the Tor network, which is a decentralized network that allows users to browse the internet anonymously. This makes it difficult for authorities to shut down these marketplaces, as there is no central server that can be taken offline.
Recent reporting from Toronto’s Citizen’s Lab details how the Saudi government targeted 36 journalists from Al Jazeera earlier this year. As we’ve recently reported in our findings regarding the SolarWinds hack, monitoring the darknet for these types of tools and malicious discussions enables organizations to understand when and if they’re a target, and prepare accordingly. It remains to be seen whether it can sustain its international growth and operate with a higher international profile, given the related risk of international law enforcement looking its way. This makes Tor Market’s performance over the same period even more remarkable. Its listings grew from fewer than ten products in the months prior to Dream Market’s closure in early 2019 to over 100 products by July that year.
Many vendors of false identification documents offered to customize the documents based on photographs or other information provided by the buyers. Figure 6c shows that, when marketplaces are ranked according to transaction volume, the second-largest marketplace is preferred in the majority of cases (31.8%). However, a closer look at the data the dark web search engine reveals that a Russian marketplace often occupies the top ranks in terms of volume but it tends not to be the preferred migration harbour, probably due language and geographical barriers. Excluding the Russian marketplace from the ranking, we find that, in fact, the largest marketplace by volume is selected 41% of the time (see Fig. 6d).
Respondents ranked vendor reliability (TF 2) as the second most important trust factor in illegal drug purchasing on the darknet. In addition, most of the respondents would prefer to purchase drugs online than in person. Both findings indicate that the perception of the reliability of markets and vendors determines potential customers’ decisions. The escrow system used in darknet markets provides an additional technical guarantee of payment security by depositing the price of the ordered product and releasing it upon receipt if both the vendor and the customer agree (Moeller, 2022). This factor was measured only as an element of guarantees, but its relevance would justify its examination as a separate trust factor if the survey would be conducted among actual darknet market users.
Some also have a rating system for vendors, just like the original Silk Road. Silk Road operated via a hidden darknet feature in the anonymous Tor network. Accessed with an app, the Tor network allowed users to anonymously browse Silk Road without the threat of traffic monitoring. All transactions were conducted in cryptocurrency — namely Bitcoin — which further ensured anonymity.
